Ermenegildo Zegna
Trivero, Italy — founded 1910
Zegna is a mill before it is a label: the wool is spun in Trivero, and the garments exist partly to show what that wool can do. The tailoring has moved steadily softer, toward jackets that behave like knitwear.
Because the house sells cloth to other makers, the only reliable way to recognise a Zegna piece is the cloth itself — dry, resilient, and finished with almost no surface sheen.
The tell
The tell is the hand of the cloth: a dry, papery Trofeo wool that springs back without holding a crease, set into a jacket with almost no chest canvas to fight it.
