Loro Piana
Quarona, Italy — founded 1924
Loro Piana buys fibre before it makes clothes: baby cashmere from Inner Mongolia, vicuna from the Andes, and the finest merino clips in Australia. The garments are almost a demonstration of the raw material.
Construction is deliberately plain — raglan sleeves, horn buttons, unadorned plackets — because any decoration would compete with the cloth. Nothing is branded on the outside.
The tell
The tell is the horn button: real, matte and slightly irregular, sewn on a shank so the placket sits flat — above a cashmere both finer and heavier than an unbranded coat has any business being.
